Lower Extremity Arterial (LEA) Evaluation Minimize

This procedure is also sometimes referred to as an ankle-brachial index (ABI).

What is a lower extremity arterial (LEA) evaluation?
An LEA evaluation is a non-invasive diagnostic procedure that compares the blood pressure in a patient's legs to the blood pressure in his or her arms. A lower blood pressure in the leg could be a symptom of peripheral arterial occlusive (peripheral vascular) disease. The text evaluates the presence, severity and general location of this disease.

What happens before the procedure?
You will be made comfortable in one of our vascular exam rooms. A pertinent medical history will be obtained by the vascular sonographer. You will be asked to remove the appropriate clothing for the exam. You will be given a patient gown to wear and a sheet or blanket for warmth.

What happens during the procedure?
The vascular sonographer will place blood pressure cuffs on your legs and arms at the appropriate levels. Doppler signals will be obtained from the arteries in your legs by holding a small probe against your skin. This is a painless procedure. Your blood pressures will be taken in your arms and legs at the appropriate levels. You may be asked to perform some exercise, such as walking on a treadmill. Your blood pressures will again be taken after you exercise.

How long will the procedure take?
It will take 30 to 40 minutes to perform the exam.

What happens after the procedure?
You will be permitted to get dressed and leave without any restrictions.

Where is the procedure done?
Your procedure will be done on the first floor of the Indiana Heart Physicians medical office building, located at 5330 East Stop 11 Rd., Indianapolis, IN 46237.
