What is an abdominal aortic ultrasound?
An abdominal ultrasound uses reflected sound waves to produce a picture of the abdominal aorta. The abdominal aorta is the large blood vessel (artery) that passes down the back of the chest and abdomen. The aorta supplies blood to the lower part of the body and the legs.

Why has my doctor ordered an abdominal aortic ultrasound?
Abdominal ultrasound is done to detect, measure or monitor an aneurysm in the abdominal aorta. An aneurysm may cause a large, pulsing lump in the abdomen.

How do I prepare for an abdominal aortic ultrasound?
It is necessary for you to be fasting for four hours prior to your examination. Take nothing by mouth—even gum or mints—for four hours prior to the examination.

What should I expect?

• Upon your arrival, you should sign in at the reception desk.
• You will then be asked to register in order to provide insurance information.
• You will then be escorted into the ultrasound room. The room will be dimly lit and contain an examination bed and an ultrasound machine.
• You will receive a brief explanation of the procedure.
• You will be asked to remove your clothing from the waist up, and women will be given a gown to wear during the procedure.
• The sonographer will apply ultrasound gel to the transducer. This allows the ultrasound beams to penetrate your abdominal wall and produce a picture of your aorta. The sonographer will take various recordings and measurements at different locations on your abdomen.

When can I expect to hear results?
The sonographer will not provide you with any results at the time of the examination. The cardiologist will provide your family physician with a written report. Often, you will not be given any results for one or two days.
